Forestry Technician (Fire/Law Enforcement Dispatch) - Direct Hire Authority

Receives fire reports, determines locations, land status, and current fire information. Coordinates aviation dispatch operations (aircraft capabilities and limitations, flight planning, aviation safety) Operates and/or directs the operation of various dispatch telecommunication systems. Processes and interprets weather information. Performs, and directs others, in inputting data into a number of fire-related computer applications. Coordinates fire training and orientation. Provides technical guidance and on-the-job training for other dispatchers. Determines response to incidents and requests and dispatches personnel, equipment, aircraft, and supplies. Physical Demands:
The work involves long hours of sitting, intense concentration, and working at peak proficiency/intensity levels with irregular breaks and mealtimes. Must be able to cope with the pressure of meeting timeframes and changing priorities. Mental concentration and accuracy are required. Work Environment:
Work is performed primarily in an office setting. During peak activity, increased radio traffic, numerous ringing phones, and conversations result in high noise levels, which require a high level of concentration to perform duties. The duties of this position create a highly stressful environment during peak activity, requiring the ability to keep calm in emergency situations. To qualify for the GS-05:
Specialized experience is experience which has provided the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to successfully perform the duties of the position. Examples of specialized experience include:
Conducting dispatch procedures for fire or law enforcement emergencies, determining resources for tactical and logistical support for emergencies. Experience that provided you with the knowledge of wildland fire suppression, prescribed burn strategies, fire behavior, and weather conditions to be able to effectively dispatch resources. Assisting with flight planning aircraft and crews, and tracking duty limitations. Utilizing emergency related computer applications to record data. -OR- A full 4 year course of study towards a bachelor's degree directly related to the position. -OR- A combination of specialized experience and education. Utilizing or training others in the use of fire-related computer applications to record data such as incident qualifications, fire reporting systems, and automated dispatch systems. This position has been identified as one of the key fire management positions under the Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) Standard. This position has been categorized as a Initial Attack Dispatcher, and requires selectee to meet the minimum qualification standards for IFPM prior to being placed into the position. //www.ifpm.nifc.gov/. This position requires special qualifications that have been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factors will be rated not qualified:
Have a minimum of 90 days of wildland firefighting experience. The Department of the Interior defines wildland firefighting experience as any non-structure fire that occurs in the wildland. Wildland firefighting experience is gained through work on the fireline in containment, control, suppression or use of wildland fire. This experience can be met by serving in a temporary, seasonal, or equivalent private sector fire position for no less than 90 days. Wildland fires are categorized into two distinct types:
(1) Wildfires - unplanned ignitions or prescribed fires that are declared wildfires; and (2) Prescribed Fires - planned ignitions. This description includes only fireline experience on a Prescribed Fire; it does not include experience in the planning stages. Prescribed fire experience must be supplemented by fire suppression experience in order to be creditable as previous wildland firefighting experience.
