Information Assistant

Implements the public information program and makes recommendations to be used in development of work plans and schedules. Assists writers, reporters, and photographers of State and national media with assignments concerning plans, actions, policies, existing management practices, and facilities. Assistance includes gathering requested information, arranging interviews, arranging travel and tours, etc. Produces and lays out brochures, promotional materials, and management plan and study newsletters for photo offset or other reproduction. Recommends format, pictures, and graphics to be used. Prepares the newsletter for distribution to all employees by writing articles, editing articles from technical staff, and occasionally soliciting material. Responds to inquiries from visitors, telephone callers, and correspondents requesting information about facilities and program activities, when requests exceed the knowledge of the information receptionists. Questions requiring technical expertise are referred to the appropriate staff specialists. Maintains, distributes, and updates the key contact computer mailing list. Routinely verifies information with key contacts and many other sources. Develops slide talks as requested to fill needs of public affairs. Guidelines are provided to meet specific objectives. Operates video camera and recording equipment to produce video to document Forest Service activities for internal training and media distribution. Assists educators in their environmental education programs, and encourages school officials to include Forest Service conservation concepts and information in their programs and classes. Researches story ideas about activities on the unit for internal and external use. Drafts news releases, feature stories, and informational leaflets and fact sheets, as assigned. Assists in disseminating information on land management planning. Establishes and maintains electronic and other files, ensuring that they contain sufficient quality and quantity of representative examples of activities, locations, management problems, and scenic views. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05. Specialized experience is defined as:
Served as an assistant to writers, reporters or photographers of local or national media; gathering information, arranging interviews, travel and tours. Familiar with graphics, brochures, promotional material and praparation of newsletters. Made presentations to community groups such as public schools or social groups on community-related topics such as fire safety, environmental awareness, recreation activities, or litter prevention. Prepared recurring reports on items tracked on a regular basis, such as trends in public information needs. Performed routine, repetitive daily activities for visitor center operations, greeted visitors and replied to inquiries requesting general information about organizational activities, programs and policies. GS-06 there is no substitution of education for this position. To receive consideration for this position, you must meet all qualification requirements on the closing date of this announcement. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
